OBC HOM: Kirk Gibson
Kirk Gibson

Nominated by: Sam Taylor

Career Stats

Why did Sam Taylor nominate Kirk Gibson for the HOM?

He's a hometown hero, born in Michigan, went to MSU, was drafted and starred for the hometown Tigers. He was a two sport athlete that pre-dated Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders. While there were other 2 sport athletes before him (Steve Garvey also played football for MSU...) Kirk, like Bo and Deion, was an actual "star" for the football team and was even an All American WR (he WAS inducted into the NCAA Football HoF in 2017). As for his MLB career, he was the ALCS MVP in 1984 for the Tigers and was the 1988 NL MVP after his move to the Dodgers in free agency. He remains the only MLBer to have won an MVP award while NEVER playing in an All Star game. He went on to manage and was 2011 NL Manager of the Year for Arizona. He currently works as a color analyst for Bally Sports Detroit and does a number of the Tiger games, but he also has Parkinson's Disease (diagnosed in 2015) so his activity has been curtailed since then.
