OBC HOM: Vern Law
Vern Law

Nominated by: Ed Watts

Career Stats

Why did Ed Watts nominate Vern Law for the HOM?

I’m extremely excited to nominate Vern Law for inclusion in the distinguished OBC-administered HOM. Vern Law was an exceptional pitcher who played his entire career for the Pittsburgh Pirates, starring for them between 1951 and 1967. The high point of his career came in the 1960 season when Law won the major league Cy Young award, won two games in the World Series, and left game 7 with a lead, and did this despite pitching on a seriously injured ankle. A man of such tremendous character that he was nicknamed "The Deacon," he was well known across his entire career for his honesty, gentility, and the respect with which he treated other people. In OBC circles, many of us have gotten to know him as extremely generous, genuinely kind, caring, and good man.
